Supreme Court Opinion from C. G. Comillion, et al., Petitioners, v. Phil M. Lightfoot, as Mayor of the City of Tuskegee, et al

1960

This opinion, delivered by Justice Felix Frankfurter, concerned the validity of Local Act No. 140, passed by the Legislature of Alabama in 1957, which redefined the boundaries of the City of Tuskegee from a square to "an uncouth twenty-eight-sided figure". The Court found that: "...the inescapable human effect of this essay in geometry and geography is to despoil colored citizens, and only colored citizens, of their theretofore enjoyed voting rights." Also included is a map detailing the original and redrawn boundaries.
